Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon

Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon - Daniel C. Dennett Dennett initially spends time justifying the reasons for this book, probably over-doing it a bit as not to offend too many potential readers. Once he is over that however it does get more interesting. The exploration of religion as a meme (or group of memes) is what struck me as most fascinating (and has persuaded me to do more research about memes and adaptive complex systems in general), though there is more here that this – I even found myself assiduously reading through the notes at the end…. It is a shame that the people who he is trying not to offend in the first two chapters are exactly the ones that would very much be offended by anything term originally suggested by Dawkins! Still if you ever wondered about the belief in belief in God this book is accessible, engaging and well written, if pink.
